This article I wrote when I was still living in Norway and missed the winter atmosphere of Hanoi. Living in the peaceful Norway I gradually forgot the busy life I had in Hanoi but all the special peaceful moments about the city are something difficult to be forgotten. I prefer autumn in Hanoi but sometimes freezing winter days could bring me special feelings about this city’s life and people. The pictures in this post were taken in a winter afternoon when I wandered around the old quarter with my friends. It was a few day before Valentine’s Day so you can see some interesting decorations related to the event.
When traveling to Vietnam, especially to the north, each season could bring you a very special feeling, especially if you experience it with a local who can tell you stories about each corner, what to do and what to eat to get the best of the local specialties.
If the hot weather patiently stays through the whole year in the center and the south, four seasons are formed quite clearly in the north. Though spring may bring too much drizzle, it creates a feeling of romance and positive energy thanks to the presence of new lives shown on green buds, the light cozy atmosphere you feel when seeing couples holding hands peacefully walking through sweet and slightly cold streets. Summer in the north is also as hot as that in the other parts of the country. However, when autumn comes it compensates the local with mild weather, picturesque landscapes created by falling leaves sparkling under the sun, which has inspired many artists to create stunning art works.
If Hanoian winters can bring you the depth of coldness into your bones, it however also helps you feel the deepest of the warmth when you roll yourself in a thick winter jacket, sitting on the pavement to eat hot street food. Don’t you know that Hanoi, or the northern part of Vietnam in general, is a heaven of winter street food which you cannot find in other parts of the country? Those are grilled sticky corn on the cob, grilled honey coated pork ribs, grilled sweet potatoes, grilled spicy pork skewers, grilled….yes, everything, I mean it,… and of course oyster and rib congee etc. I think I started to drool!
Now just let the photos tell you the story of Hanoian winter… Yes, it is cold but it is worth the experience!
Valentines’ spirit: the last winter leaves are still trying their last efforts to hold the hands of the trees tightly and shining together till the last minutes. Source:Thuyishere.com
